How Does Tennis Without Borders Work?
Tennis Without Borders is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to help children develop life skills through tennis. We provide tennis instruction, gear, and school supplies. We have assisted in international programs in Cameroon, Uganda, Ghana, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Malawi, Barbados, Cuba, and Colombia.
In the United States, we have donated hundreds of tennis shoes, racquets, and items of clothing as well as school supplies to many National Junior Tennis and Learning Centers (NJTLs). NJTLs are a network of nonprofit youth development organizations that combine education and tennis to serve underprivileged children.
The Sportsmen's Tennis & Enrichment Center in Dorchester, MA, Norwalk/Stamford Grassroots Tennis in Norwalk, CT, Six Love Tennis which serves Lower Fairfield County, CT, and Stay and Play at the Central Lincoln County YMCA in Damariscotta, ME are NJTLs we continue to support with donated items.
In 2018, we implemented an art component to our trip to Cameroon and again in Colombia and Ethiopia in 2019. We found that in addition to supporting programs with tennis instruction and equipment that the art projects united all of us immediately and tapped into a side of the children that maybe had not been touched before. The ability for children to express themselves through the arts and tennis has been a perfect combination.
